NGO trains building industry artisans '
By Agency Reporter

Punch, Monday, 25th May 2009

A non-governmental organisation, Shelter-Watch Initiative, in conjunction with the Department of Building, Yaba College of Technology, has commenced the training of artisans for the construction industry.

This is to help solve the dearth of this group of skilled workforce and improve the standard of those remaining in the industry.

The organisation, in a statement by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Segun Olutade, said that unless artisans like bricklayers, carpenters, painters and others were adequately trained in modern building techniques, the problem of incessant building collapse, and other vices that inhibit sustainable development would not be resolved.

Commending the initiative, a former President, Nigerian Institute of Architects, who is also the President, Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria, Mr. Jimoh Faworaja, said the programme was the first of its kind in the country and commended SWI for coming up with the idea.

He promised to rally the support and contributions of relevant professional bodies to making the module developed by the Nigerian Institute of Building for the training to be comprehensive and all-embracing.
